Aquel que pudo, Fabio, aquel que pudo
llegar en la constancia a tal estado,
que del lazo interior más apretado,
cuando no le desata rompe el nudo.
Este a los hados superior, desnudo
de los afectos, viva recatado,
tema el encanto del semblante amado,
que dulce mueve, y persuade mudo.
Y tú que a las pasiones te rendiste,
no fuerces de cobarde el apetito,
añadiendo martirio al vencimiento.
Que quien la ejecución sola resiste,
no excusa lo culpable del delito,
y malogra el poder del escarmiento.
