- XLVII -

Retarte a quien se deben alabanzas
mayores cuanto menos pretendidas
pues con tenerlas todas merecidas
te persuades que ninguna alcanzas.
Parécense a tus mismas esperanzas,
pues con tenerlas casi conseguidas,
como mérito propio las olvidas
asegurando en trémulas balanzas.
Si al deseo común correspondieran,
premio de las virtudes, beneficios;
fueran los merecidos, no contados.
Por ti, en todos los ánimos se hicieran,
y casi aun a ti mismo, sacrificios,
y fueran repetidos, y acertados.
