Dardanio con el cuento del cayado
el nombre y la figura deshacía
de una hermosa ninfa que él había
en mil cortezas de árboles pintado.
Y con un triste gesto, y demudado,
con un ay que del alma le salía
«¡Ay traidora Maranta!» le decía
«en quien puse mi seso y mi cuidado.»
Si pudiese del alma tu retrato
quitar, cual de estos árboles lo quito,
no harías tú mi vida ser tan corta.
Mas hay cuan por demás triste me mato
que lo que está en el corazón escrito
borrarlo en la corteza poco importa.
