Condena al fabricar soberbios palacios

¡Ay, de cuán poco sirve al arrogante
el edificio que, soberbio empina
sobre pilastras de Tenaro, y fina
de mármol piedra, y color cambiante!
Pues cuanto más del suelo se levante
máquina excelsa, al cielo convecina,
tanto más cerca atiende a su ruina,
tanto más cerca al rayo del Tonante.
Consumirá en los jaspes su tesoro;
y consumidos de la propia suerte
ellos serán, en términos ligero.
Y, por ventura, entre alabastros y oro
del alto capitel, verá su muerte,
pobre y desnudo, el sucesor primero.
