El que soberbio a no temer se atreve
la varia fuerza del mudable hado,
y en alegre fortuna confiado
de los dioses creyó el aplauso leve.
Ejemplo tome de mi gloria breve,
en cuyo fin dejó el egipcio armado
al claro Nilo; y vino el scita osado,
que el puro Tanais, y el Oronta bebe.
Troya fui, de los dioses obra ilustre,
honor del Asia, hermosa, rica y fuerte,
madre de reinos, y del mundo espanto.
Cayó mi gloria y de su antiguo lustre
sólo han quedado ¡oh miserable suerte!
Cenizas viles y afrentoso llanto.
