Ofrece el juego la engañada diestra
ante el rey enemigo el esforzado
Scévola, y de aquel yerro no culpado
con denuedo espantoso el pesar muestra.
Del fuerte corazón la insigne muestra
el ofendido rey miró turbado,
y aquella mano respetó admirado,
que supo errando a tantas ser maestra.
«No castiguéis, le dijo, valeroso
mancebo, el fuerte brazo, cuyo engaño
me dio la vida, y a dártela me mueve.
Hoy Roma, con tu intento generoso,
verá que, libre de tan cierto daño,
más a tu yerro que a tus fuerzas debe.»
