De Alejandro al trasunto, muda historia
que animó en bronce artificiosa mano,
dos fijó sus columnas el tebano,
César mira, envidioso de su gloria.
Viendo que en corta edad larga victoria
ganó del orbe el macedón ufano,
de sus años lamenta el curso vano,
que aún no ha dado principio a su memoria.
«Tú, ilustre joven, dice, sólo viste
glorioso fin de tu alto pensamiento;
tú al mundo grande, a ti pequeño el mundo.
¿Quién a la excelsa cumbre que subiste
podrá llegar? Ni ¿cuál osado intento
presume ser a tu valor segundo?».
