Castiga el cielo a Tántalo inhumano,
que en impía mesa su rigor provoca,
medir queriendo en competencia loca,
saber divino con engaño humano.
Agua en las aguas busca, y con la mano
el árbol fugitivo casi toca;
huye el copioso Erídano a su boca,
y en vez de fruta aprieta el aire vano.
Tú, que espantado de su pena, admiras,
que el cercano manjar en largo ayuno
al gusto falte y a la vista sobre:
¿Cómo de muchos Tántalos no miras
ejemplo igual? Y si codicias uno
mira al avaro en sus riquezas pobre.
