La sima horrible con espanto mira
en su gran plaza Roma, y el dudoso
portento, grave al pueblo victorioso
no enseñado a temer, suspenso admira.
En tanta confusión turbado aspira
a buscar el remedio, y presuroso
consulta si de Jove poderoso
se pudiese aplacar la justa ira.
Asegura el oráculo invocado
de daño al pueblo si a la grande cueva
lo más ilustre ofrece de su gloria.
Curcio, de acero y de valor armado,
se arroja dentro; y deja con tal prueba
libre la patria, eterna tu memoria.
