ACT I.

SCENE: — A handsomely furnished physician's consulting room, with doors down R., up R. and up L. Two large windows up L. C. and up R. C., showing view of house extension up L. and a tree or two and distant view of other houses and lawn .

Door down R. leads to waiting room. Door up R. leads to a small retiring room. Door up L. leads to the interior of house .

There is a large handsome desk C. with series of drawers — with desk telephone, writing materials, electric light, etc. L. of desk is a doctor's chair — this chair is large and luxurious, with high back, cushioned foot-stool below it. A smaller chair R. of desk. Another chair R. C. Another chair down R.

Below door L. a handsome glass cabinet filled with instruments. Near this cabinet is electrical heating apparatus for sterilizing instruments. Up L. C. is nickel-finished operating chair — with white-covered cushions. An electric light with reflector hangs over this chair. Between doors R. a large handsome book-case, filled with medical works. Between windows a small solid table, on which stands microscope and box of glass slides, also stethoscope, hypodermic syringes, etc. In upper L. corner, a good sized medicine cabinet, fully stocked. A refuse receptacle with automatic cover, near operating chair. On walls, handsome pictures. Over instrument cabinet, are three framed diplomas. Hard wood floor with handsome rug .

TIME: — A little after 3 P. M.

At rise, stage empty. After a moment, door up L. is opened and GERALD (DR. SUMNER) enters . GERALD is a well-dressed, attractive young man of about 32. He wears hat and gloves and carries stick. Goes to desk C., idly picks up and glances at two or three letters, tosses them back on desk — takes off hat and gloves — puts them with stick up R. — then puts hands in pockets and saunters irresolutely about for a moment — yawns — looks at watch — goes to window up L. and looks out indifferently — whistles or hums snatch of some new music hall air. Continuing the song, he strolls to bookcase, takes out large medical book — opens it and goes to desk C., carelessly looking over pages. At desk he abruptly throws down book, with an air of boredom, takes out gold cigarette case, lights cigarette — takes French paper-covered novel from drawer in desk, seats himself comfortably in his arm-chair L. of desk, arranges cushions behind his head, puts feet on foot-stool and settles himself to read .

KNOCK on door up L.

GERALD starts half guiltily, throws away cigarette, puts novel back in drawer, takes feet from footstool, picks up medical book :

(GERALD, left alone, lights another cigarette, sits back and puffs — then takes out his watch — sighs — puts it back again. Then, with sudden thought, rises, goes out up R., brings back a golf bag with steamship labels, etc. on it and clubs turned wrong end out — places bag on centre desk and takes out clubs, placing them on desk — picks up driver — handles it — testing it and finds position where he can try swing without smashing furniture, swings twice, takes club back to desk; picks up two putters of distinctly different type — examines them — then takes golf balls from pocket of bag — puts ash tray on floor by window up L. C. Stands down stage L. C. and putts alternately with the two clubs, aiming ball for ash tray. While he is thus engaged , HEINRICH (the Doctor's German valet) enters R. with letters and papers in hand, stops in astonishment, on seeing Doctor .)
