ACT 1.

SCENE 1

— ( Count piper at a writing Desk; ) laying down his pen, he speaks the following Soliloquy; the extravagant flights of this romantic boy, who is by the will of his father, in a few years to become the Monarch of Sweden, interests me much in his favor. There is in him, a certain wild undigested ardor of soul, which bespeaks capacity, and energy. And why should they not be called into Action? Shall musty rules, dictated by shallow Plodding heads, withhold from him, the grasp of that Sceptre, which his towering mind entitles him to wield. No, I will plan the elervation of my darling boy; good old Berklaw must be brought over to favor me, ( he looks down as in deep thought :) Aye well it will all work: — I must try him on the Esplanade, at the next sham fight at the Citadel. In the mean time, I will gradually prepare the proper measures.
General Erstoff.

ACT 4th

SCENE the 11th.

— The inside of a polish dungeon is seen, in which Augustus is confined in Irons. He breaks out into the following soliloquy. The clank of fetters, and the grating noise of massy doors — The silence of night and a dreary solitude, awful as that of the Tomb, have succeeded the glare of Royalty, and the adulation of Courtiers. When I was a King, and encircled with all the empty blandishments of regal dignity, I hardly had time to keep in view, that I was a man; my bosom however, tells me, that my people loved me. It is now, my only consolation. Within those damp, and impervious walls, I derive some comfort from the reflexion, that whenever I passed through a willage, every countenance seemed to speak the language of loyalty and happiness. Let me then cherish a love for mankind, and even in this hideous place, it will alleviate my sufferings — Let the hard hearted, unjust Charles, go on in his mad career, justice will at last overtake him. His strong arm, has placed me here, and raised Stanislaus on my ruins; perhaps, it may yet fail him — At any rate. I will bear my misfortunes with fortitude. It is almost time, for Vromar to come. (The rattling of chains is heard, and the door of the dungeon opens.) Vromar enters and throws his arms affectionately over Augustus. They are both silent for a few moments. Vromar rises and pronounces the following malediction. May the accursed schemes of mad ambition, be forever blasted. May the cruel, and despotic aim be withered, and may he, who tramples humanity, and justice, under foot, and renders millions wretched, be swept off the face of the earth, and his name consigned to eternal execration!
