COSTUMES, MODERN

ACT I

SCENE. — Garden at the Erskines'. At the rear a weather-beaten board fence, seven or eight feet high, partially covered by withered vines which show signs of having been lately touched by the frost. Close to the fence, on one side, is a small hot-bed covered with glass, and further along, also under the fence, stand a rustic table and bench. Dry leaves, with here and there dead branches and decaying apples, litter the ground. Near a garden-bed, prepared as for planting bulbs, are seen wheelbarrow, rake and other garden implements . UNCLE NAT, a white-headed old negro of great respectability, is kneeling before the bed, a bulb in his hand .

Enter BRUCE and HUNT; BRUCE carrying a gay bunch of chrysanthemums , HUNT laden with a grip .
