AN INVENTION

Dedicated to the New Element and the Directors in general .

( And Stacy's Corners in particular .)

      CAST OF CHARACTERS
    • Some of the characters must have "doubles"; for instance, when Lochinvar steps into the machine, there must be a young man as much as possible like him, dressed in bicycle suit, ready to step out as Lochinvar "modernized." Director Shocks must have a small boy for his double, etc.
    • MISS MEHITABLE ( the Teacher )
    • Old-fashioned gingham dress, loose enough to be worn over an "up to date" costume, removable corkscrew curls, lace head-dress, lace mitts, etc. When in cabinet, dress and curls can be slipped quickly off, and big fancy hat put on.
    • DIRECTOR SHOCKS
    • Ill-fitting, rustic clothes, cane, red handkerchief, etc.
    • HIS "DOUBLE"
    • A very small boy, stylish little suit, big lace collar, etc. He might have whiskers on his face exactly like Shocks'.
    • DIRECTOR OATS
    • Costume same as Shocks'.
    • DIRECTOR HAYES
    • Old baggy clothes loose enough to be worn over modern suit. False whiskers. When in cabinet, old clothes and whiskers may be slipped easily off.
    • LOCHINVAR
    • High riding boots, gauntlet gloves, hat with plumes, sword at side. Gay belted cloak with puffed sleeves.
    • HIS "DOUBLE"
    • Young man same size, etc., dressed in cycling suit.
    • MAUD MULLER
    • Light shirt waist, large white kerchief, long black skirt with bright lining turned back and fastened behind, "milkmaid" fashion, to disclose a short gay petticoat. Sleeves rolled back, kerchief over head. Should carry a big rake.
    • When in cabinet, long skirt let down, severe black coat and walking hat put on.
    • SMALL BOY WHO SPEAKS
    • Little old-fashioned suit, such as seen in old "New England Primers."
    • HIS "DOUBLE"
    • Stylish little boy same size, etc., carrying a little cane. Might have a cigarette.
    • BOY ON BURNING DECK
    • Plain rough suit a bit ragged; hair unkempt, etc.
    • SIX LITTLE GIRLS
    • Little white night gowns and caps of cheesecloth, all alike. Little girls should be from six to eight years of age.
    • BABES IN THE WOODS
    • A boy and girl as small as possible; little old-fashioned costumes of any kind. Dried leaves and twigs clinging to their costumes.
    • LADY CLARE
    • "Russet gown," looped back in front to show pale yellow petticoat. Long brown hair, with yellow rose in it. Head uncovered.
    • LORD RONALD
