PROLOGUE: A parlor of the castle. FIRST ACT: The room of Francesca. Spring morning. SECOND ACT: The castle courtyard. Same day. THIRD ACT: A garden. Two months later. Afternoon. FOURTH ACT: The room of Francesca. Same day.

A large parlor of the castle of Verruchio, near Rimini. Upstage, to the left, a door opening into the bedroom of Francesca. Upstage, to the right, weapons and full suits of armour. To the right, on the first level, a large window with inside shutters. Upstage, at an angle to the left, a niche with a large statue of the Virgin, of painted wood. On each side a vase containing autumn flowers. Above the niche, a suspended lamp, from which shines a faint light. Door to the left, on the first level. On the right, second level, small door opening on to Giovanni's apartment .

Large table and large oak chair. Two square stools. Two large chests of sculptured wood on which are thrown bear and wolf skins. The room is plunged in semi-darkness. By the open door of the bedchamber a light can be perceived .

At the rise of the curtain, the First Woman, aged, is seated on the stool near the table. The Second Woman pulls out from two trunks pieces of silk, lace, etc. The Third Woman enters by the open door of the bedchamber and helps the first two; during the dialogue she goes and comes, carrying the materials to the bedchamber. (Music in the distance .)

A court in the castle seen diagonally, the right angle at C. It is enclosed by a portico on R., having three arches, under each of which is a doorway closed by a curtain; on L. a covered loggia with three arches of same order, open to the country beyond and showing view , L. 1. From behind the pillar supporting the first arch, there is an entrance, supposed to lead from the prison of the castle to the loggia. There is a step from stage is the narrow platform before portico. PAOLO and FRANCESCA together . FRANCESCA is leaving the alcove as the curtain rises — her hand is on the hangings . PAOLO is already half way down stage — he stands facing audience, passing his hand over his forehead as if waking from a happy dream .
