SCENE: A country road near New Haven .

TIME: The present .

A lonely and unfrequented spot on a country road near New Haven, Conn. Halfway up stage a board fence stretches left and right. The fence posts are three feet six inches high. Between them are four boards six inches wide, six inches apart, the lowest board resting on the ground cloth. In center of fence, two square gate posts, practical gate on hinges with latch. On left gate post a rural delivery letter box; the opening for letters is towards the audience. Gate and fence painted white. Fence is supposed to run parallel and close to a road .

Down stage on left a set piece representing a stone wall about three feet high, and with the end in view unfinished and dismantled. It projects upon the stage a distance of ten feet. It is covered with ivy; and behind it appear the tops of three small evergreen trees. The stone fence and the trees are supposed to be on the side of the road opposite to the white fence. Between the board fence and the line of the stone fence the ground cloth is painted to represent a road; back of each fence it is painted to represent grass, except where a path comes down from upper right to the gate, passes under it and is merged in the road. The back drop represents a closely grown wood. The borders hang low and show leaves and branches of trees .

The time is summer, but the light is shaded to suggest a place shut in by trees .

(BUCK stands at stone wall with back to audience peering off left through evergreens. His movements are those of a man anxious not to be seen. He hears a noise off left, in alarm looks left . IKEY enters left carrying over his shoulder, by the barrels, two rifles; in his left hand are two uniforms of khaki tied up in bundles. On top of each bundle is a campaign hat with a broad band of light blue . IKEY moves heavily as though weighed down by the rifles , BUCK vehemently motions him to join him behind the stone wall .)
